About Me
Welcome to my website.
I am a paediatrician, originally from Tyneside, now living and working in London. In addition to practising medicine full time, I am an author and speaker. This site details a few of my interests and current projects. You can also contact me through the site by clicking on the link above right.
Outside of my work, I have a love of theatre and literature (especially Shakespeare) and enjoy exploring cuisines of the world. I also collect interesting wine and gins, and love a good pub quiz.

My WorkMy professional work is split between being a full-time children's Doctor in the NHS, writing and teaching. Where possible, I try to fit in opportunities to talk to groups of motivated people about my interests, experiences and opinions.
The menu at the top right will help you explore these. |
Background
I was educated at The Royal Grammar School, Newcastle upon Tyne, where I took leading roles in school plays, chaired the Debating Society and played electric violin in the Jazz Band. I return annually to lecture on Shakespeare and medicine.
Between school and University I acted with the English Shakespeare Company Youth Theatre and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. I arrived at Cambridge University (Peterhouse) in 2000, where I read Natural Sciences, specialising in Experimental Psychology. My specialist interests were Autism Spectrum Disorders and Synaesthesia, working under Professor Simon Baron-Cohen. During my time at Cambridge, I acted in multiple productions with the ADC Theatre and toured Europe in A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the European Theatre Group. I also directed Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor. At 22, I participated in Non-stop Shakespeare - a charity event performing The Complete Works of Shakespeare, non-stop over 64 hours, unabridged. We raised several thousand pounds for an orphanage in Peru and finished live on BBC Radio 5. After graduating, I worked for Cambridge Wine Merchants, whereafter I returned to Cambridge University (Hughes Hall) in 2005 to study medicine on the Cambridge Graduate Course. I was also lucky enough to provided the fan's DVD commentary for Red Dwarf Series VI My first experiences of life as a doctor were followed by the BBC for the multi-award winning first series of BBC Three's Junior Doctors: Your Life in Their Hands. |
