DoctorUnlike most doctors, I did not jump straight into a medical degree from school. I read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, specialising in Experimental Psychology.
Originally torn between a career in scientific research or acting, I discovered where the two skill-sets combine. A blend of science and empathy is essential in medicine, and so I embarked upon a medical degree as a graduate. I have never looked back. |
Paediatrician
My interest in paediatric medicine was fostered during my Foundation Years at the Great North Children's Hospital, which is part of The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. During these two years, I worked two thirds of my time in clinical medical work and one third of my time in research at the Northern Institute of Cancer Research. My area of interest was looking for genetic and epigenetic abnormalities in children's brain tumours.
I was accepted to start an 8-year training programme in Paediatrics in London in 2011 and received formal accreditation of Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2015. I became a member of the Academy of Medical Educators the same year.
My particular areas of clinical interest are General and Acute Paediatrics, Diabetes in Children, and Medical Education. Below is a summary of my clinical experience todate.

In 2017, I was asked by The Huffington Post to provide medical advice for new parents, based on the most commonly asked questions on their forum. Each week, a different topic - from burping to rashes - was discussed, highlighting the range of normality, red flags to watch out for, and hints & tips.

Medical Education
I have been interested in Medical Education since before I was a doctor.
I have been a Tutor in Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology and Psychology at three colleges of Cambridge University:
Selwyn College, Lucy Cavendish College and Hughes Hall.
A Fellow of The Academy of Medical Educators, I have co ordinated teaching programmes in paediatrics for Junior doctors and regularly help on exam courses. I tutor students from before applying to medical school, right through to post-graduate level. I also enjoy teaching at conferences and lectures, details of which can be found in the Speaker section of the website.
My aim is to work within the field of medical education, alongside my clinical responsibilities. My particular interests lie in improving diversity in medical imaging, use of virtual wards to enable clinical teaching at a distance and widening access to paediatrics.
I am an examiner for the RCPCH Diploma in Child Health, and the Genetics lead for Skin Deep

Junior Doctors: BBC Three
My second year as a doctor was followed by the BBC, as part of their award-winning series "Junior Doctors: Your Life in Their Hands". At the time of filming, I was doing a rotation in adult & paediatric plastic surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. I was struggling at the time to work out whether I wanted to pursue a surgical or a medical speciality. It was there, whilst filming Junior Doctors, that I settled on a career in Paediatric Medicine.
I am still in regular contact with many of the original crew, especially Suzi Bachelor and "Little" Jon Barclay, who remain close friends. Below is a video of potted highlights from my time on the show.

I have not done any broadcast television work since Junior Doctors, owing to full time professional commitments to the NHS. However, I have done multiple speaking tours, details of which can be found in the "Speaker" section of my website.
